What is a spiritual home? Do you have one? Church going families often like to think that just because they raise their children in church that they are a “spiritual” family. Too many families have a form of Christianity that they put on but underneath there is nothing there. There are often too many displays of spiritual pretense which in time translate into nothing more than being a Pharisee. Children will pick up on this sooner or later. You will reap from a home life lived in hypocrisy.
A spiritual home has an entirely different approach to life than the average American home. The focus is different. Instead of life being centered around TV, movies, cartoons, Disney, video games and the like, which are all worldly centered and self-gratifying, a spiritual home focuses on Christ and what He would have them think and do. They listen to music that will help them think Christ’s thoughts. Even their children’s music is chosen so it will teach Biblical attitudes and attributes. There is little to no television at all in a spiritual home because it does not feed spiritual thinking in the family. Entertainment is closely scrutinized and is not a daily diet for a spiritually minded family. In a spiritual home, even their time is closely monitored because “redeeming the time” and using it productively, is part of the Christian culture of that home.
Every day happenings within the family are given spiritual applications on a daily basis because spiritual homes want to think and be like Christ. Sin is dealt with and never overlooked. In a spiritual home, character training is an on-going thing because the family is striving for the mind of Christ.
In order to have a truly spiritual home, we must throw the world out! Throw out books, magazines, movies, computers, TV, music and even worldly toys that could contaminate your child’s thinking. Guard your child’s toy box and let nothing come in that could turn their hearts to the strange thinking of this world.
We have to be vigilant in these things!
Once you’ve cleaned out the world’s garbage…replace it with good, edifying books, games, toys, music etc. There are good things to enjoy as a family. Look for them.
Seek guidance on where to look for wholesome inputs for your home.
Spiritual homes don’t just happen. They are created by spiritually minded parents who desire to live with the mind of Christ. Be diligent to have a nightly family devotion time.
Make it special for the whole family. This could be a very rich and rewarding time for everyone in the family. Skip the theology lessons and spend time teaching your children basic Christian principles and character. Sing with them. Pray with them. Talk with them. You’re building memories for a life time.
Do you want a spiritual home? There is only one way to have it. Commit yourself to it and don’t turn back from your pursuit of Godly living.
Your children will thank you.
God said of Abraham….
Genesis 18:19 “For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.”
He wants to do the same for you.
